AND THEN IT JUST HAPPENED ... but it was forty-five minutes and a little bit extra before it actual did. Really think about how this real life drama can be used in different areas of your life ...
It was late May back in 99, when Pierluigi Collina, the popular Italian referee, blew his whistle to end the first forty-five minutes on one of the biggest sporting events on the planet. This years Champions League Final was being played between two very successful clubs, Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
Munich took an early lead in the game and never looked in any real danger at all – they were cruising, coasting and confident.
Now, imagine this situation that you are wearing Sir Alex Ferguson’s shoes, the Manager of Manchester United, as you stride towards the dressing room, knowing you have around 10 minutes to draw up on all your motivational skills to inspire your team from an un-inspired, un-United display.
WHAT would you do in this situation? - You could:
1. Deliver a creative last minute 'fight them on the beaches' epic speech to arouse the dressing room.
2. Loose your temper and tell them in very colourful terms how disappointed you are with them.
3. Say nothing, and just stare at each player, as they sit pondering away inside their own thoughts.
The Manchester United players prepared themselves for the second forty-five minutes, Ferguson’s creatively in the moment said:
“If you lose, you’ll go up and collect losers medals and, you’ll be six feet away from the European Cup, but you won’t be able to touch it. I want you to think about the fact that you’ll have been so close to it and for many of you that will be the closest you’ll ever get. And you will hate the thought for the rest of your lives. So just make sure you don’t come back in here without giving your all.”
Ferguson’s individual speech had amazing impact on those players sitting inside the dressing room. They often comment now in autobiographies about this now famous motivational speech.
United looked a completely different side throughout the second half, and it wasn't until ninety minutes were on the clock that something special happened. Here is your chance to explore 4 mins of all that ecstasy and emotional drama, which will always be remembered, as the game Manchester United - NEVER GIVE UP ...
