HAVE YOU EVER stopped to think about this question ...

"Why DON'T you do some of the things you know you SHOULD do?"

Everything we do, we do for a reason. We may not even be aware of the reason consciously, however there is undoubtedly a single driving focus behind all human behaviour. You probably didn't know about this until now, but there is a driving force controlling you even as you read this text, and this force will be with you for the rest of your days. Everything you and I do, we do out of our need to avoid PAIN, or our desire to gain PLEASURE.

Frequently, during conversations I hear people talk about changes they really want to make within important areas of their life, like business, career, health, personal growth, etc. They may feel frustrated, or overwhelmed, or even aggressive within themselves, because they know they NEED to take action, but really cannot move out of a particular gear called procrastination.

Utilising the forces of pain and pleasure, WILL allow you to create the lasting change and self improvements you desire, and move away from procrastination towards what you really want. For example, maybe you have had a specific experience of putting something off for so long that suddenly you felt pressure to just do it and get it done. Here you changed what you linked pain and pleasure to. Suddenly, not taking action before, now became more painful than just putting it off.

Recently, I browsed over an article, which zoomed into how different Donald Trump and Mother Teresa were in terms of conscious decisions or personal values. From the opening, it was very obvious that these two famous people, were clearly at opposite ends of the stick.

Trump learned how to achieve pleasure by having the most expensive yachts, the largest buildings and gaining the biggest deals. His pain is being second best at anything. Mother Teresa focused upon other people, to the point that when she saw others in pain, she also suffered. She would associate pleasure by helping others out of their misery, which helped alleviate her own pain, that helping them experience life in a different way or giving them pleasure, she would feel pleasure also.

If love, success, or integrity are important to you, then they are part of your values system. Like the above a value is an emotional state you feel is very important either to experience (because of the pleasure you believe it will bring) or to avoid (because of the pain you associate to it).

All our decision making is driven by these values: how will a given action help us move toward a pleasure value? - Will it help us avoid or move away from a pain value?

What is one of the most important pleasurable emotions you value, and whats a painful emotion you'll do almost anything to avoid?

In summary, the secret to success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you do that, you're in control of your life. If you don't, life controls you. In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) the word Pain equates to "AWAY From", and the word Pleasure means "TOWARD". We cover this section in great depth during our NLP Master Practitioner training course, where we don't just talk about making change happen, we actually make it happen. The end results are always amazing and profound.
